blunt observation (1 of 1):

i'm sure there are people who would label me a hypocrite for the post i'm about to write, but i'm getting so fed up that i don't even care.

when the hell did "party" become synonymous with "do drugs" ??? i'm getting really tired of this drug culture that seems to be taking over my generation. don't get me wrong, i try not to look down on someone for recreational pot smoking because i truly do believe that people experiment as part of their growing process [though the amount of experimentation isn't necessarily the same for everyone]. but really!?! as a gal who has put an end to more than one relationship because of drugs (not just weed, though that was the most recent), i really wonder what makes it so cool? when did it become impossible to have a good time without getting blazed beyond recognition? i mean, i used to drink [and i say USED to because believe it or not, i quit] and i believe in living by the old addage 'don't knock it til you try it' but it's just getting ridiculous now. i see so many people that i've called friends at one point or another slipping into the subset of potheads and drug addicts. for some ungodly reason, people actually think of it as a compliment to be called a "druggie". i guess with my generation attempting to ascribe to the hippie mentality and live in that way, smoking weed and doing drugs (namely shrooms, lsd/acid, and extasy) seems to be the best way, other than buying all your clothes from thrift stores to achieve that 1960s "look", to seem legit as a "neo-hippie". well, i don't know if everyone else is buying that shit, but i'm not. there's absolutely nothing cute to me about being a burnout. since going to college, i've seen so many intelligent, funny, awesome people give in to that scene and let me tell you, it's unfortunate as hell.

and as for the kids who are trying to recreate the disco-era '70s and '80s, for one thing: it's over. it's passed. it's annoying when someone's entire shtick is that they dress like they're late for a bianca jagger party at studio 54. i encourage everyone to cultivate a personal style because lord knows, i am wont to make fun of people with no sense of style whatsoever. (so, i'm a gossip. get over it. everyone is these days. i just happen to admit it because anything i have to say about someone, i will say to them in person as well. rather than giving me shit for being honest about my gossip game, why not be a little more honest to yourself and everyone else about yours?) however, these vain attempts to recreate the disco era, complete with raging cocaine habit, are not glamorous, not stylish, and definitely not cool. what the fuck is wrong with kids these days? it all seems cool until that shit fucks you up. there's absolutely nothing cool about having your stomach pumped in the middle of the night because you were "partying" a little too hard. there's nothing cool about random nosebleeds and headaches, or "rusty pipes" and "pounders" as they're called, respectively. and that shit definitely won't seem cool when you get addicted and lose half your body weight and your hair starts to fall out and your good looks fade when you finally have to wean yourself off that shit. it's no joke. none of it is a joke.

i've heard so many people say they smoke weed and do drugs to "expand their minds" but my question to them is this:

what do you do while your mind is "expanded"? what do you do, create, produce that is worthwhile that justifies daily consumption of drugs?

writers, playwrights, and poets in the absinthe and opium eras were actually writing what turned out to be some of the best material ever while high. songwriters and writers and musicians in the '60s and '70s were making great music while smoking pot, so yeah, maybe sometimes it can legitimately be used to "expand your mind" to allow the creative process to flow. but that's not what these kids are doing with it. i've seen what happens, but there are no novels being penned or songs being written. instead, there's lots of playing video games, sitting around in a stupor, eating other people's food, or- best of all- sleeping. so exactly what is the purpose? i'm just curious.

i'm not knocking anyone's choice of recreational activities, but at some point, doesn't that shit get old? it did for me, and i'm just an observer of the lifestyle. i'm just wondering, i guess, what keeps it fresh? what is the allure of countless nights spent sitting around, lightheaded, not doing anything.

thoughts? opinions?

let a sister know.
